I'm Giving up my Pack Rat Ways!!

Well I knew it was inevitable, but the time finally came. At 2 1/2 years into our marriage my Mom finally told me I needed to get my stuff out of her house. I'm talking about everything I'd accumulated in the 22 years of life before I got married. It wasn't pretty. Especially because the old me felt like it was necessary to keep every single note I ever received in Jr. High and High School, every birthday card I got, every young women's handout, every school paper and project, every dance or music concert program , etc, etc, etc. Yep, I was a stereotypical pack rat. I knew that I needed to change and I did it! I ended up throwing most of it away. If it was really important, something I might want to look at in the future or show my kids I took a digital picture of it. That way it's not taking up space. Well, physical space anyway. The rest of it, all of my notes and papers from high school and college, all the letters and notes from friends, and especially the handouts I got from Young Women's and/or Relief Society are probably on their way to the recycling plant by now. It took me days to go through things and I'm still not completely done. But it felt so good to throw stuff away.

I'm working in the Young Women's in my ward now and after looking at all of the YW handouts that I threw away I vow not to ever give my girls some little piece of paper with a quote on it that's going to add to the clutter they will have to go through after they get married.

AMEN!!! I'm at the point now that I never want to take handouts given during lessons because I know I'll just go home and throw it away. Let's all vow to save a tree and just say no to creating handouts! Ü

I agree!!!! I am SO like that....I saved every note, card, ribbon, medal...etc. It's crazy now and I have this crazy idea that everything has sentimental value. Every now and then I go through a phase and just throw stuff away...it feels so good!

That's so funny. I just did the same thing at my parents house and found a folder full of YW handouts. It was even tempting to keep them, since I work in YW now, but I was strong and threw the whole blooming thing away before I could go through and rescue individual pages. Aaaah!
